I've done M&A and investing on the private side of the mining business, and put in time as a sell-side analyst too — I've worked both primary and secondary markets, and lived through a full industry cycle start to finish. When I look at a commodity, the first thing I do is draw that supply-demand map: find where the tension sits, figure out who's the marginal buyer — that's where price goes. Sort out what's cyclical versus structural first, then pick the right instrument to play it.
