EU Investigates Align Technology Over Alleged Bundling of Clear Aligners and Intraoral Scanners

The European Commission has launched a formal antitrust investigation into Align Technology (ALGN), alleging the company bundles its dominant Invisalign clear aligners with its iTero intraoral scanner — effectively forcing dentists to buy its scanner to order its aligners, putting its European business model at direct risk.
What exactly is the EU investigating?
The core allegation: Align Technology is using Invisalign's dominant position in clear aligners to force dentists into also purchasing its iTero intraoral scanner — a device that creates 3D scans of teeth and jaws.
This means → dentists who want to order Invisalign for a patient must buy iTero; there is no "aligners only, bring your own scanner" option.
In plain terms = if you want the company's aligner, you have to buy the company's scanner — rival scanners are shut out.
How does the "bundling" actually work?
The Commission identified two key mechanisms: refusing to certify competitors' advanced scanners, and refusing to accept scan data from rival devices submitted by dentists.
This means → even if a dentist already owns another brand's scanner, the scan data cannot be imported into the Invisalign system — technically locked out.
This reflects an interoperability barrier — the issue is not that rival products are inferior, but that the interface will not let them in.
