Zhipu AI Launches ZCode Tool as GLM-5.2 Enters Autonomous Coding Arena
Miles Bennett
Zhipu AI released ZCode on July 2 — an autonomous coding harness built on its latest model GLM-5.2 — entering the AI agent arena in direct competition with Anthropic and other U.S. labs.
What is ZCode, and why now?
ZCode is a harness — a control framework that lets a large language model autonomously break down tasks, write code, and execute operations instead of just answering questions.
This means → Zhipu AI is moving from "model provider" to "provider of an AI assistant that does the work." The commercial upside is fundamentally different.
It is built specifically for GLM-5.2, released last month and dubbed by some in Silicon Valley as another "DeepSeek moment" for Chinese open-source AI.
How crowded is this race?
Autonomous coding platforms have become the core battleground where Chinese and U.S. AI labs compete for developers. Demand has surged recently.
Zhipu AI's direct rival is Anthropic's Claude Code — but Anthropic recently stumbled: it was caught embedding hidden code that tracked Chinese users in Claude Code. The code has been removed, but developer trust took a hit.
In plain terms = Zhipu AI is entering the field while its competitor is on the back foot, trying to convert a trust window into user growth.
What is Zhipu offering developers?
Existing subscribers get a 50% increase in data quota. New ZCode users receive 5 million free tokens.
Li Zixuan, Zhipu AI's head of global operations, posted on X that ZCode was built "standing on the shoulders of an outstanding open developer community," adding that "competition and collaboration push us all forward."
This reflects a deliberate push to own the "open-weight" label, setting Zhipu AI apart from Anthropic's closed approach.
What is the key variable?
Whether this window can turn into sustained developer retention is the core test of the launch's commercial value.
This means → Promotions and free tokens can drive trial signups, but whether developers stay depends on ZCode's product quality and GLM-5.2's real-world performance.
Zhipu AI is listed in Hong Kong as "Knowledge Atlas Technology"; its overseas brand is Z.ai. Capital markets will watch retention data closely for pricing signals.
