A California federal judge on Sunday temporarily barred the Pentagon from enforcing a lobbying restriction against Alibaba while the company's legal challenge proceeds. What does the ban actually prohibit?
A new U.S. law bars lobbying firms from simultaneously representing companies on the Pentagon's "Chinese Military Company" list and U.S. defense contractors.
In plain terms = lobbying firms must pick a side — Chinese tech clients or American defense clients, not both.
After the law took effect last week, several top Washington lobbying firms dropped Alibaba and other Chinese tech giants as clients.
Why did the court step in?
A Northern District of California judge ordered the Pentagon not to treat Alibaba as a "Chinese Military Company" under the provision until the court rules on Alibaba's motion — or 60 days after the hearing, whichever comes first.
This means → Alibaba gets a temporary window to maintain its lobbying channels before a final decision.
