Agricultural Bank of China (01288.HK) reported ¥236.5 billion in net profit for the first nine months, up 7.1% year-on-year, driven by a 12.48% jump in revenue led by interest income; NPL ratio edged down to 1.23%, but a narrowing provision buffer makes Q4 credit-cost trajectory the key watch point.

01

Where did the money come from?

Revenue hit ¥619.5 billion in the first three quarters, up 12.48% YoY — a standout pace at a time when net interest margins across the sector are under pressure.
Net interest income — the money a bank earns by lending out deposits and collecting interest — reached ¥472.5 billion, up 10.59%, accounting for roughly 76% of total revenue. This means → the growth engine is highly concentrated: loan-book expansion is doing most of the heavy lifting.
Net profit attributable to shareholders came in at ¥236.5 billion, with basic EPS of ¥0.65. In plain terms = profit grew slower than revenue, suggesting costs rose in tandem — the bank earned more, but spent more too.
02

NPL ratio fell — so why isn't it all clear?

The non-performing loan ratio stood at 1.23% as of end-September, down 0.04 percentage points from year-end 2025 — a positive direction, showing new bad loans grew slower than the total loan book.
Yet the absolute NPL balance still rose by ¥15.2 billion to ¥358.7 billion. This means → bad loans did not shrink; the ratio fell because the denominator — total loans — grew faster.
This reflects a signal worth tracking: the NPL-ratio improvement is driven by a bigger loan base, not by fewer soured assets.
03

What does a narrowing provision buffer signal?

The provision coverage ratio — the "safety cushion" a bank sets aside relative to its total bad loans — stood at 289%, down 3.42 percentage points from year-end 2025.
289% is still high: for every ¥1 of bad debt, the bank holds nearly ¥2.90 in reserves. Put simply = the cushion is thick, but it is getting thinner.
The real question for the market: can the modest NPL-ratio decline and the marginal provision narrowing hold through year-end? The answer will directly determine the full-year credit cost — how much loss provision the bank books — and is the single most important metric to watch in the Q4 results.
