AI-Powered Alipay Begins Limited Grayscale Testing

Alipay launched an AI-native overhaul on June 16, replacing its layered menu system with a chat assistant called "A-Bao" that connects over 10,000 services — the biggest redesign in the 1-billion-user app's twenty-year history, though early tester feedback already trails the hype.

01

What actually changed?

The home screen collapses from stacked menus into two pages: the "A-Bao" chat interface and an "Assets" dashboard. Scan-to-pay and transfers stay as side buttons.
Users swipe right into a conversation view, state what they need in plain language or voice, and A-Bao routes them to the right service — no more drilling through menus.
Over 10,000 services have been adapted so far, spanning government services, transport, and daily-life payments.
This means → Alipay is redefining itself from a "super-app toolkit" into an AI agent gateway — one chat box replacing the entire navigation stack.
02

What does it feel like to use?

Check your housing fund: say "look up my housing fund balance," and A-Bao locates the right mini-program, pushing the query screen straight to you.
Find a charger: say "my car is almost dead," and A-Bao pulls your authorized location data, lists nearby stations by distance, and shows fast/slow charger counts and prices.
In plain terms = you used to need to know *which* mini-program does the job; now you just say *what* you need — the navigation cost shifts from the user to the AI.
03

How is money kept safe?

Alipay drew a hard line: A-Bao handles navigation only and never touches funds. Every step involving a payment or balance change requires the user's own confirmation.
Li Jun, Ant Group VP and head of the Alipay business unit, said the platform added a "safety lock" on top of its existing risk-control system, with further safeguards to follow.
The new "Assets" page consolidates balances previously scattered across Yu'e Bao, Xiaohe Bao, and other products into a single personal-ledger view.
This means → the most sensitive question about AI agents — "can it spend my money for me?" — is blocked by design: AI navigates, the human authorizes.
04

How is the beta going?

The AI version is in a limited gray-scale test — a small first batch of users, not a full rollout. The old and new versions run side by side; users can switch freely.
Invite codes triggered a frenzy on social platforms; resale listings appeared on second-hand marketplaces. Yet early tester reactions struck a different note — some said bluntly "nothing that wowed me" and flagged errors in income-and-expense calculations.
Wang Pengbo, senior fintech analyst at Botong Consulting, noted that a large-scale redesign must change ingrained user habits while meeting data-compliance and AI risk-control requirements — a phased rollout with continuous tuning is the most likely path.
05

What does it mean strategically?

Wang Pengbo sees the revamped Alipay as an Agent super-gateway offering AI-powered errands, payments, and asset management to 1 billion users — and China's first AI application at that user scale.
Cheng Hua, deputy director of the Digital Economy Research Center at Renmin University, called the launch a signal that mobile internet is moving fully into the AI era, lowering the barrier to AI adoption and advancing broader access.
This reflects a deeper bet: Alipay is not just chasing a better interface — it is competing for the AI service-distribution layer. Whichever chat box becomes the default way users call on services wins the next round of platform competition.
06

What comes next for the open ecosystem?

Alipay plans to roll out an Agent open platform for developers, merchants, and service providers — partners can plug in without building from scratch.
This means → the logic mirrors the mini-program playbook: attract developers with a 1-billion-user base, then use richer services to feed user retention.
But the core test is already on the table: whether 1 billion existing users convert into real daily active retention on the AI gateway will determine if this redesign delivers commercial value.
