Bloomberg analyzed roughly 800 bullish leveraged equity ETFs. AI-linked exposure rose from 26% in 2022 to 58% by mid-2026 — nearly doubling in four years.

Global leveraged ETFs hold roughly $250 billion — about 1% of the $22-trillion-plus global ETF market. Yet they generate 16% of all daily ETF trading volume.
These funds must "rebalance" every day — resetting positions to their target leverage multiple at the closing price. That adjustment is compressed into the final minutes of each session.
In plain terms = a large pool of capital is forced by its own rules to buy or sell in the same narrow window, colliding with index rebalances, options hedging, and institutional block orders. The late-session impact dwarfs what the asset base alone would suggest.
A 1% move triggers $10 billion in trades?
Nomura estimates that at the June peak, every 1% move in underlying securities required leveraged ETFs to rebalance roughly $10 billion in securities.
JPMorgan strategist Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou said the heavy tilt toward tech means "leveraged equity ETFs will continue to generate large rebalancing flows and push tech-stock volatility higher."
This reflects a shift: leveraged ETFs are no longer just "following" the market — their rebalancing mechanics actively create additional volatility.
Why are memory chips at the center of the storm?
Among single-stock leveraged ETFs, SK Hynix, Samsung, Micron, and SanDisk — four memory-chip makers — account for nearly half of all exposure.
Since mid-2025, single-stock leveraged ETFs tracking these companies have attracted over $19 billion in net inflows — SK Hynix alone drew about $10.8 billion, Samsung roughly $4.3 billion, SanDisk about $2.6 billion, and Micron around $1.9 billion.
Asym Research founder Rocky Fishman noted the fundamental change is not overall size growth, but a "migration toward more volatile underlyings" — including the fast-growing single-stock leveraged ETF category.
What happened in South Korea?
The Hong Kong–listed CSOP SK Hynix leveraged ETF peaked near $17 billion in assets, briefly becoming the world's largest single-stock leveraged ETF.
Its sheer size relative to SK Hynix's daily free-float trading volume was so large that the market warned the ETF had begun to drive the underlying stock rather than track it. Within two months of local Korean leveraged ETF launches, over $9 billion flowed in; the Kospi then swung violently intraday, with benchmark volatility briefly exceeding Bitcoin's — and the shock spilled into global markets.
In plain terms = the ETF was supposed to follow the stock. Because it grew too large, the stock started following the ETF — the tail wagged the dog. Korean regulators promptly raised margin requirements and suspended new product listings.

Academy Securities macro strategy head Peter Tchir compared the current situation to the early-2018 collapse of VIX-linked leveraged products: "This is how VIX ETFs blew up — mechanical processes are fraught with risk."
RBC derivatives strategy head Amy Wu Silverman likened the rebalancing mechanism to a "short gamma" effect in options markets — large moves in the underlying produce subsequent amplification — and warned that even investors with zero interest in leveraged ETFs should recognize these products can still impact their portfolios.
