J.P. Morgan data shows five AI-linked sectors now account for 50.8% of the S&P 500 by weight — half the benchmark is, structurally, an AI bet.

01

What's inside that 50.8%?

J.P. Morgan groups AI exposure into five buckets: semiconductors at 17.3%, hyperscale cloud at 17.2%, hardware at 10.6%, software at 9.3%, and power at 2.4%.
This means → chipmakers plus their biggest buyers alone account for nearly a third of the S&P 500.
A note on the data: the five sub-weights sum to 56.8%, not 50.8% as labelled in the chart. J.P. Morgan's original data offers no explanation; we report both figures as given.
02

Four years of gains — who led, and who is fading?

Semiconductors dominated — posting annual gains of 98%, 75%, 46%, and 35% from 2023 through 2026, the highest cumulative return of all five groups.
Hyperscale cloud rose 70%, 32%, 24%, then just 4% in 2026 — near-stall speed. Software followed a similar arc: a 58% surge in 2023 narrowed to 4% by 2026.
In plain terms = the two earliest AI winners — cloud and software — are visibly running out of steam, while semis, though decelerating, still lead the pack.
03

What role do hardware and power play?

Hardware rebounded in 2026 with a 30% gain, snapping back to levels not seen since its 2023 run — a classic "lag-then-catch-up" pattern.
Power was the steadiest of the five, posting annual gains between 16% and 37% — more of an infrastructure anchor than a momentum trade.
This reflects a rotation: as upstream chips and cloud slow, capital is migrating toward hardware equipment and power infrastructure in search of the next leg of certainty.
04

Half the S&P is AI — what does that mean for investors?

The index's overall performance is now tightly coupled to AI-chain momentum: when AI rallies, the S&P rallies; when AI corrects, the index has little room to hide.
This means → even a plain-vanilla S&P 500 index fund is, in practice, a half-portfolio AI bet.
The rotation rhythm across sub-sectors — which peaks first, which takes the relay — is now the key variable shaping where the S&P 500 heads next.
