AI Server Demand Drives Up MLCC Inventory Value as Distributor Stock Levels Hit Record Lows
Nashnova编辑部
Global MLCC distributor inventory has fallen to a record low, dropping 8% in four weeks; yet rising unit prices pushed total inventory value up 10% — AI server expansion is turning this basic component into the next supply bottleneck.
What are MLCCs, and why do they matter for AI?
MLCCs — multilayer ceramic capacitors, grain-of-rice-sized components found on virtually every circuit board — are known in the industry as "the rice of electronics."
AI server boards are far denser than conventional ones, consuming significantly more MLCCs per unit. This means → the faster AI infrastructure scales, the faster MLCC supply gets eaten up.
After memory chips and optical modules, MLCCs have become the third wave of AI-driven investment targets drawing market attention.
How tight is inventory right now?
As of August 9, global MLCC distributor inventory fell 8% from four weeks prior, extending a sustained downtrend.
Year-on-year figures are starker: through end-July, inventory volume plunged 22% while the unit-price index rose 13%.
In plain terms = fewer units on the shelf, but each one costs more — so the dollar value of what distributors hold actually climbed 6% year-on-year and 10% over four weeks.
Are the big manufacturers running low too?
Murata Manufacturing (村田製作所), the world's largest MLCC maker, saw its own inventory drop 8% in four weeks.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics posted an even steeper 20% decline over the same period.
This reflects a tightening that goes beyond the distribution channel — upstream manufacturers are drawing down stock in lockstep, signaling the squeeze is propagating from end-demand back to the source.
What does UBS expect next?
UBS analyst Shingo Hirata's team wrote: "We believe the supply-demand tightness may start in AI-related and distribution channels, then spread to the broader market."
This means → the current shortage is still "localized." If AI investment does not decelerate, the gap could spill into consumer electronics, automotive, and other major MLCC end-markets.
Whether the supply-demand gap narrows within 2026 will be the key checkpoint for this niche market.
