AMEC launched six new tools in one day — four of them in thin-film deposition — signaling that China's leading etch-equipment maker is now directly challenging the U.S.-Japan incumbents across the full equipment stack.

Six tools in one day — what's the rush?

At an industry conference in Wuxi on September 2, AMEC unveiled 6 new tools spanning etch, thin-film deposition, and silicon-carbide power-chip manufacturing.
This is the second batch launch in six months — 4 tools were already released at SEMICON China in March.
This means → AMEC is compressing its cadence from "a few tools a year" to "a batch every six months," racing to fill the domestic-substitution window.
02

Why is thin-film deposition the main target?

Four of the six new tools are deposition systems. Deposition — layering materials onto a wafer surface — and etch — carving away the excess — are the two core steps in chip fabrication.
Both steps are dominated globally by Lam Research, Applied Materials, and Tokyo Electron.
In plain terms = AMEC used to do only the "carving." Now it wants the "layering" too — stretching from half the production line to the whole thing.
03

Can R&D spending sustain this pace?

First-half R&D spending hit RMB 2.04 billion, up 36.9% year-on-year and equal to 30.5% of total revenue.
The company disclosed that its product-development cycle has shrunk from three-to-five years to under two.
This reflects a deliberate trade: nearly a third of revenue funneled into R&D is what makes a batch launch every six months possible.
04

What comes next?

AMEC currently has over 20 products in development across six equipment categories — the pipeline is expanding fast.
This means → launching tools is step one; the real test is whether the new categories — deposition above all — can reach volume commercialization.
In plain terms = building a tool and selling it at scale are two different things. Whether deposition systems win slots on mainstream fab lines and secure bulk orders will determine if the full-line strategy succeeds.
