Anthropic Partners with Macquarie and GIC to Form AI Data Center Joint Venture

Anthropic, Macquarie Asset Management, and Singapore sovereign fund GIC have formed Theseus Infrastructure to build AI data centers — a move that shifts the capital burden of Anthropic's compute buildout toward long-term outside equity.
What does this joint venture actually do?
The new entity, Theseus Infrastructure, will develop AI computing infrastructure with an initial focus on the U.S. market.
Macquarie and GIC will provide most of the equity capital for each project. Anthropic commits to covering any consumer electricity-price increases the facilities may trigger.
This means → Anthropic is not writing the big checks. It is offering an "electricity-cost backstop" — trading operational risk-sharing for construction-stage capital.
Why does Anthropic need outside capital for data centers now?
Anthropic has already planned custom data centers across multiple U.S. states — including Texas and New York — with an expected outlay of $50 billion.
It recently secured a $35 billion loan to lease computing chips at five data-center sites, backed by a Google credit guarantee.
In plain terms = a $50 billion construction bill on one side, a $35 billion chip-leasing loan already drawn on the other — self-funding and debt alone can no longer keep pace with the buildout, so long-horizon equity partners become essential.
What does this move signal for the wider industry?
Rival OpenAI has already launched the Stargate infrastructure joint venture. Anthropic, by contrast, had relatively few large-scale data-center partnerships until now.
Theseus is the latest example of banks and institutional investors racing to deploy capital into AI infrastructure.
This reflects a competitive front that is shifting from the model layer to the infrastructure layer — whoever locks in compute supply fastest sets the tempo for the next round of model training.
