Anthropic Recruits Google TPU Founder, Accelerating Custom Chip Strategy

Anthropic has hired Amir Salek, a co-founder of Google's TPU chip program who led its first seven generations. The move signals a concrete shift from buying chips to building them — a new front in the AI compute race.

Salek co-founded Google's TPU — tensor processing unit, a chip purpose-built for AI workloads — and led seven generations from design through delivery.
This means → Anthropic hasn't hired an ordinary chip engineer; it has brought in someone who built an entire chip product line from scratch. That experience is rare industrywide.
He will report to James Bradbury, head of Anthropic's compute team. After leaving Google in 2022, Salek held senior roles at NVIDIA and private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management.
Why build chips in-house?
Anthropic currently sources chips from NVIDIA, Google, and Amazon — a diversified supply base.
In plain terms = even with multiple suppliers, buying off the shelf leaves two problems unsolved: supply crunches when demand spikes, and generic architectures that don't perfectly fit Anthropic's own models.
Custom silicon addresses both at once — securing supply and tailoring chip design to the company's specific workloads.
What is happening on the procurement side?
Anthropic has signed an initial order of roughly $250 million with UK chip startup Fractile, with plans to expand the contract.
It has also secured data-center capacity agreements with Riot Platforms and Volta Infra Holdings.
This reflects a dual-track strategy: lock in external supply for the near term while building in-house capability for the long term.
Where do competitors stand?
OpenAI has partnered with Broadcom on a custom chip called "Jalapeno," slated for deployment later this year.
This means → on the custom-chip track, OpenAI already has a product taking shape, while Anthropic is just entering the team-building phase — a clear time gap.
Whether Salek can replicate his track record of building a chip line from zero at Google will be the key test of Anthropic's compute independence.
