Anthropic Signs 300 Megawatt Computing Agreement with SpaceX

Anthropic has reached a computing power cooperation agreement with Musk's SpaceX, reflecting the immense pressure top AI companies face on the supply side against the backdrop of increasingly fierce competition for AI computing power.

According to a joint statement from both parties on Wednesday, Anthropic will gain access to over 300 megawatts of computing resources at SpaceX's large data center in Memphis, known as "Colossus 1."

Anthropic stated that this collaboration will "significantly" scale up its computing resources and enable the company to increase the usage limits of its AI products.

The financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed. For the rapidly expanding Anthropic, the significance of this deal is straightforward: the demand for its Claude series AI software has soared in recent months, with a large influx of corporate clients using its programming assistance and automation tools, making the bottleneck in computing power the core obstacle to product delivery.

Two AI Rivals Move Forward with Cooperation

The uniqueness of this partnership lies in the fact that Anthropic and xAI are direct competitors in the AI race.

xAI has now been incorporated into SpaceX, and although its own programming AI products are still lagging behind the industry leaders, the company has established a significant advantage in data center construction and NVIDIA chip reserves.

This advantage is being transformed by SpaceX into a commercial opportunity. It is reported that SpaceX has previously signed a similar computing power supply agreement with AI programming startup Cursor, with cooperation terms attached.

The strategic logic of turning data center assets into external revenue sources is becoming increasingly clear as SpaceX prepares for its IPO process—the computing infrastructure of xAI is gradually evolving in a "platformization" direction.

In addition to SpaceX, Anthropic also procures chips and cloud services from Alphabet's Google.

Collaboration Develops Orbital AI Computing Power

It is worth noting that this agreement also covers a more forward-looking term: Anthropic has "expressed its intention to collaborate with SpaceX on the development of several gigawatts of orbital AI computing power."

This is in line with Musk's previously publicized vision—he has mentioned on several occasions plans to deploy data centers into space and power them with solar energy.

Meanwhile, SpaceX recently revealed in a local filing in Grimes County, Texas, that it plans to jointly build a chip factory with Tesla, with an estimated total investment of at least $55 billion, and if all subsequent expansion phases are implemented, the investment could reach as high as $119 billion.

The project is characterized as a "next-generation vertically integrated semiconductor manufacturing and advanced computing wafer factory." The implementation of the aforementioned plan will further strengthen SpaceX's strategic depth in the field of AI infrastructure.
