BlackRock: AI Overweight Stance Unchanged; Competition and Interest Rates Are Key Risks

BlackRock global chief investment strategist Wei Li reaffirmed the firm's overweight stance on AI, while flagging rapid Chinese competition and rising interest rates as the two core risks.

01

Why is BlackRock still betting big on AI?

Wei Li told Bloomberg TV directly: "Our conviction in the overall AI investment thesis has not wavered."
This means → BlackRock sees the structural case — growing compute demand, accelerating tech adoption — as intact despite near-term headwinds.
Maintaining an overweight — allocating more to a theme than the benchmark requires — sends a clear signal: short-term turbulence does not change the long-term bet.
02

Risk one: how fast is China catching up?

A wave of new Chinese AI products is rapidly closing the gap with Silicon Valley, eroding pricing power in both AI models and semiconductors.
Alibaba's latest model reportedly matches or surpasses Anthropic's flagship Fable 5.
In plain terms = when a fast follower can build something comparable, the leader can no longer charge a premium. Li calls this the "kill zone" — firms that offer neither cutting-edge tech nor competitive pricing will be squeezed out.
03

Risk two: what do higher rates mean?

Governments are borrowing more and AI investment keeps accelerating, pushing the rate floor higher. Both real rates and term premium — the extra return investors demand for holding long-dated bonds — face upward pressure.
"A higher-rate environment raises the bar that fundamentals need to clear," Li said.
This means → the higher rates go, the more the market demands from AI companies' actual earnings — narrative alone won't cut it; firms need to deliver real profits.
04

Could more competition actually be a good thing?

Li does not see intensifying competition as a threat to the AI mega-trend; she argues it may accelerate adoption instead.
This reflects a core BlackRock view: the AI pie keeps growing — competition culls the weak players, not the theme itself.
But whether AI asset valuations can hold up in a high-rate environment remains the key test ahead — an overweight call is not the same as a blank cheque.
