BlackRock Files for Third Bitcoin ETF, Offering Downside Protection with Capped Upside
nashnova research
BlackRock filed a prospectus with the SEC for PBIT, its third bitcoin ETF, which uses options contracts instead of direct holdings to target a ~10% maximum loss — while capping upside.
How is this fund different from IBIT?
PBIT does not hold bitcoin directly. It buys options contracts linked to IBIT to gain bitcoin exposure.
This means → investors get a trimmed version of bitcoin's moves — losses are cushioned, but gains hit a ceiling.
The fund runs three overlapping sets of options contracts, typically rotating one set each month to keep protection continuous.
Is the "lose no more than 10%" promise solid?
The prospectus states each options set initially targets a maximum loss of roughly 10% of the underlying asset (before fees).
But BlackRock itself warns: the fund does not guarantee a fixed buffer floor, bottom, or cap.
In plain terms = 10% is a target, not a hard guarantee — in extreme conditions, actual losses could exceed that figure.
Are there already similar products on the market?
Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart noted that Calamos, First Trust, and Innovator have already launched similar "buffer" bitcoin funds.
PBIT is BlackRock's third bitcoin ETF filing. This means → BlackRock's strategy is to deepen its product line around bitcoin, not rush to cover more tokens.
What does BlackRock's crypto-ETF lineup look like now?
Bitcoin side: IBIT holds $65.7 billion in net assets; BITA (launched June 2026) generates income through options trading.
Ethereum side: ETHA holds ~$8 billion; ETHB (launched March 2026) offers ethereum plus staking-yield exposure.
This reflects BlackRock's current bet on only two tracks — BTC and ETH — with no spot-ETF filings for Solana, XRP, or other tokens.
Why not expand to more tokens?
ETF Store president Nate Geraci publicly expressed surprise, saying BlackRock "clearly has high conviction in sticking to BTC and ETH only — at least for now."
This means → until the regulatory landscape and market demand clarify, BlackRock is choosing to deepen its moat with strategy products (buffers, yield enhancement) rather than spread horizontally across tokens.
Whether BlackRock will eventually expand token coverage beyond strategy products remains the market's next focal point.
