Air China flew a C919 on a scheduled Beijing–Ulaanbaatar service Wednesday — roughly 1,200 km, about two hours, operating as a daily rotation.
This marks the first time a C919 has left Chinese airspace since the jet entered commercial service in 2023.
The flight was possible under an existing civil-aviation agreement between China and Mongolia. This means → no separate Mongolian type certification was required — the bilateral treaty itself provided the legal basis.
Why does the lack of Western certification matter so much?
The C919 holds neither FAA (US) nor EASA (European) airworthiness approval.

Retired aviation analyst Rob Morris told CNBC: "COMAC's development and production pace is simply too slow to genuinely compete with Airbus and Boeing."
Can China's airlines actually move away from Boeing and Airbus?
In May, China confirmed an order for 200 Boeing aircraft plus engines and parts.
This reflects a reality: even with strong policy backing for COMAC, Chinese carriers still rely overwhelmingly on Boeing and Airbus fleets.
AeroDynamic Advisory managing director Richard Aboulafia put it bluntly to CNBC: "How many parts does it take to build a plane? All of them. Even fasteners — miss one and you can't build the aircraft."
Where is the real test for the C919?
The C919 targets the single-aisle narrowbody market — the same segment as the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo — with a maximum capacity of 174 passengers.
Its supply chain still depends heavily on foreign components, with limited localization. This means → scaling production is not just about building more factories — a shortage at any single link can stall final assembly.
