ChatGPT Monthly Active Users Surpass 1 Billion, Becoming the Fastest App Ever to Reach the Milestone

ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly app users in May, hitting the milestone in roughly 3.5 years since launch — the fastest any app has done it. This means → AI has crossed from novelty into infrastructure-grade adoption, on par with maps and social media.
How fast is 1 billion, really?
Sensor Tower estimates ChatGPT hit 1 billion monthly app users in May 2025, about 3.5 years after its November 2022 launch.
The previous record holder was Google Maps, which took roughly 5 years. In plain terms = ChatGPT cut the "fastest to 1 billion" timeline nearly in half.
OpenAI disclosed in February that ChatGPT's weekly active users already topped 900 million, with monthly web visits and mobile sessions more than 6× the second-largest AI platform.
It's still No. 1 — but how fast are rivals closing in?
ChatGPT grew 62% year-over-year. Its rivals grew far faster: Claude surged 640% and Meta AI 973%.
This means → ChatGPT's absolute lead is enormous, but the growth-rate gap is narrowing quickly — the market is shifting from one dominant player to a multi-platform landscape.
Google Gemini, ByteDance's Doubao, and its overseas variant Dola are also listed among major competitors.
How did the Pentagon deal reshape user sentiment?
OpenAI struck a deal with the U.S. Department of Defense in February to deploy its models on Pentagon classified networks. ChatGPT uninstalls spiked roughly 295% on February 28 after the news broke.
Anthropic refused to join the Pentagon effort — and reaped a sentiment windfall. Claude rose to No. 1 on the App Store that weekend, surpassing ChatGPT in U.S. downloads for the first time.

Is the public souring on AI?
Anthropic called last Friday for a global pause on AI development, warning that unchecked progress could soon spiral out of control.
Pope Leo warned in a May 25 letter that AI demand could widen inequality and raise public-safety concerns.
Yet a BCG survey of roughly 12,000 frontline workers, published June 3, found 74% use AI regularly — up 23 percentage points year-over-year. Over 40% of regular users say AI saves them the equivalent of a full workday every week.
Sentiment cools but usage climbs — is that a contradiction?
Sensor Tower analyst Abe Yousef attributes rival growth to visible model improvements and stronger market sentiment.
He added: "While negative sentiment toward AI is undeniably growing, consumers are increasingly using and relying on these platforms."
This reflects a split reality: public worry is intensifying while behavioral dependence is deepening — people distrust AI and can't quit it at the same time.
OpenAI and Anthropic are both racing toward IPO — what does that signal?
OpenAI filed its IPO paperwork on Monday afternoon U.S. time; Anthropic submitted its IPO prospectus to the SEC one week earlier.
This means → the two leading AI companies are entering the public markets almost simultaneously — capital markets are about to price a "pure-play AI company" for the first time.
