Beijing has approved roughly 10,000 Nvidia H200 chips each for ByteDance and Tencent in recent weeks, with several more tech firms in line — the clearest sign yet that China is loosening its grip on US chip imports to keep its AI training race alive.

Lenovo and other Nvidia partners notified Chinese clients last week that they could resume orders for AI servers containing H200s.
Each purchase still requires case-by-case approval through a process led by China's National Development and Reform Commission — supply is not open-ended.
Why is Beijing easing up now?
Chinese AI firms are racing to close the gap with top US models such as Anthropic's. The training stage still depends heavily on Nvidia chips.
For inference — generating real-time responses — domestic chips can increasingly substitute. For training — building knowledge and finding patterns from massive datasets — most firms still cannot do without Nvidia.
This reflects a core tension: Beijing wants to nurture homegrown chips and keep its leading AI labs competitive globally, so it is opening the valve in measured doses.
