China's fixed-asset investment totaled ¥33.4 trillion in the first three quarters of 2026, down 7.2% year-on-year. The headline decline is narrowing, but private investment fell harder and the northeast collapsed — the structural divergence is the real signal.

01

A 7.2% drop — how bad is it really?

Fixed-asset investment (excluding rural households) hit ¥334,115 billion in Jan–Sep, down 7.2% on a comparable basis. The pace of decline is slowing.
This means → investment is still shrinking, but shrinking more slowly — the direction hasn't changed, the intensity has eased.
All three sectors fell: primary industry down 3.9%, secondary down 2.7%, tertiary down 10.0% — services-linked investment took the hardest hit.
02

Inside industry and infrastructure, who is still expanding?

Industrial investment fell 2.8% overall; manufacturing dropped 2.1%. But mining bucked the trend, rising 3.2% — capital is still flowing into resources.
Infrastructure investment fell 4.2%, with traditional projects under pressure. New-economy segments surged: telecoms investment jumped 30.8%, air transport rose 13.8%, water transport rose 13.5%.
In plain terms = money for roads and bridges is shrinking; money for data centers and telecom networks is expanding fast — the definition of "infrastructure" is being rewritten.
Intellectual-property-product investment grew 9.3%, one of the few positive items. This reflects continued resilience in R&D and technology spending.
03

Which region fell the hardest?

The northeast plunged 26.0% year-on-year — a cliff-edge decline, far exceeding every other region.
The east fell 10.3%, central China 11.1%, the west 8.7% — not a single region posted positive growth.
This means → the investment contraction is nationwide, not regional. But the northeast's drop is two to three times deeper than elsewhere — regional divergence has reached an extreme.
04

Why is private investment the bigger worry?

Private fixed-asset investment fell 10.4% in Jan–Sep, deeper than the headline 7.2%.
In plain terms = government and state firms are still propping things up, but private firms are pulling back harder — business confidence is weaker than the aggregate numbers suggest.
By enterprise type: domestic firms fell 7.0%, Hong Kong / Macau / Taiwan-invested firms 7.6%, foreign-invested firms 6.7% — every category contracted, though foreign capital's decline was the mildest.
September's month-on-month gain was just 0.07% — a negligible improvement. This reflects that no meaningful turning point has arrived on the investment front in the near term.
