As of end-July 2026, China's installed solar capacity reached 1.286 billion kW, edging past coal power's 1.285 billion kW to become the country's largest power source by capacity. Capacity is number one — does generation keep up?

January-to-July solar generation reached 802.4 TWh, up 15.5% year-on-year, outpacing total electricity-demand growth by 10.8 percentage points.
Solar's share of total electricity consumption hit 13%, up 1.7 percentage points from full-year 2025.
In plain terms = solar ranks first in capacity but delivers only 13% of the electricity. Coal, now second in capacity, still generates far more power. This reflects solar's structural weakness: panels installed, but utilization hours remain low.

What is the next bottleneck?

Solar is a weather-dependent source; how much it generates depends on sunlight and grid absorption — the grid's ability to consume or store solar output in real time.
This means → passing coal in capacity is a milestone, but whether solar's generation share keeps rising hinges on storage and grid-dispatch infrastructure catching up.
Put simply = enough panels are in the ground; the test now is whether the grid can absorb what they produce.
