Chinese AI Models Now Account for 58% of Usage Among US Companies
N.R. Finch
US companies now route roughly 58% of their tokens through Chinese AI models on OpenRouter — up from under 10% at the start of 2025 — marking a historic crossover that is eroding OpenAI's and Anthropic's grip on the developer ecosystem.
What does the 58% number actually mean?
OpenRouter's latest data shows Chinese AI models now handle about 58% of all tokens US companies process on the platform — an all-time high.
This means → on the platform developers use to access and compare models, Chinese models are now dominant and US models are the minority.
At the start of 2025, Chinese models sat below 10%. A more-than-threefold jump in roughly six months is far faster than typical market-share migration.
How did the share flip happen?
Mid-January: Chinese models held under 10%; US models commanded roughly 80% of platform tokens.
March: Chinese models overtook US models for the first time — the crossover point, from challenger to leader.
First week of July: Chinese model share briefly spiked to 63%, then settled back to around 58%.
Who is driving the shift?
DeepSeek has become the most widely used Chinese AI model among US companies.
OpenRouter — a platform that lets developers and enterprises access and compare models from multiple providers — is considered a reliable gauge of real-world AI adoption.
In plain terms = developers vote with their feet, switching to whichever model delivers the best performance per dollar — and DeepSeek is currently the biggest beneficiary of that switching.
How hard does this hit US AI companies?
The sustained rise in Chinese model share means OpenAI, Anthropic, and other US providers are losing meaningful ground in the developer ecosystem.
This reflects a shift where the performance-versus-cost trade-off is overriding brand loyalty in model selection.
Whether the trend continues depends on the ongoing contest between both sides on performance and cost — for now, the balance is tilting toward Chinese models.
