ConocoPhillips posted $4 billion in Q3 net income — double last year — driven by a 32% jump in realized prices; but output is slipping, and an 8.7% election-night oil crash is forcing the market to re-price the company's 2029 growth story.

01

Profits doubled — where did the money come from?

The main driver is price: average realized price hit $61.40/boe, up 32% year-on-year.
This means → the doubling came not from selling more oil, but from selling each barrel for more — split volume from price, and volume is actually falling.
Adjusted EPS of $3.27 beat the Street estimate of ~$2.97 by roughly 10%.
02

Why is production actually declining?

Total output was 2.302 million boe/d, down 97,000 boe/d year-on-year. On a comparable basis, the drop is still about 40,000 boe/d (−2%).
Two drags: Middle East conflict disrupted Qatar operations, and rising royalty costs at Canada's Surmont project ate into volumes.
In plain terms = the overseas book is shrinking; organic growth in the U.S. Lower 48 only partially offset the gap.
03

How is the cash being divided up?

Operating cash flow: $7.17 billion. Capex: $3.13 billion. Free cash flow: $4.04 billion.
Shareholder returns totaled $3.4 billion — $2.4 billion in buybacks plus $1 billion in dividends — tracking the full-year target of returning 45% of operating cash flow.
The board also approved an 11% dividend hike to $0.93/share, payable December 1.
04

Is the 2029 growth story still credible?

CEO Andy O'Brien reaffirmed the target of $7 billion in incremental free cash flow by 2029, adding that "2029 is not an end point."
But on election night, November 4, the market bet on a faster Iran détente. Brent plunged 8.7% intraday, briefly breaking below $95/barrel; ConocoPhillips fell 5.17% that session.
This reflects a market acutely sensitive to growth promises that only pay off at high oil prices — every leg down in crude chips away at the 2029 target's credibility. The stock edged up just ~0.6% pre-market after the earnings release, suggesting the oil-price shock is still being digested.
