Deutsche Bank to Launch Crypto Custody Services Within Weeks, Expanding to Asia Next Year
nashnova research
Deutsche Bank will go live with a crypto custody platform within weeks — starting in Germany, expanding to Asia next year. Europe's largest bank is formally crossing into digital-asset safekeeping, redrawing the line between traditional banking and crypto.
What exactly is Deutsche Bank launching?
The bank is rolling out a crypto custody platform — a service that stores digital assets on behalf of clients — with Germany as its first market.
It will initially support Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), then add services helping clients move in and out of major stablecoins — digital tokens pegged 1:1 to fiat currencies like the dollar.
This means → Deutsche Bank is not trading crypto; it is starting with the vault business — keeping institutional assets safe.
Why move now?
Corporate-bank co-head Gerald Podobnik disclosed the plan at the IMF–World Bank meetings in Bangkok.
His rationale: stablecoins alone represent hundreds of billions of dollars, proof that new value pools have formed over the past two decades.
In plain terms = the money is already there; banks can no longer pretend otherwise.
What comes after custody?
Deutsche Bank also plans tokenised deposits — converting conventional bank deposits into digital tokens on a blockchain — and will help clients issue digital bonds and other blockchain-based securities.
Podobnik stressed that blockchain solutions are a complement, not a replacement: "We need to offer tokenisation as an add-on — but not necessarily replace what we do today."
This reflects the big-bank playbook: wrap new technology inside an existing compliance licence, rather than competing head-on with crypto-native firms.
Can it actually work?
The push is part of Deutsche Bank's corporate-banking target of 8% compound annual revenue growth through 2028.
The platform will expand to Asian financial hubs next year; Podobnik has spent more than twenty-three years at the bank.
This means → the real test is whether a traditional bank's compliance edge — licences, anti-money-laundering infrastructure, institutional trust — can convert into meaningful share of the crypto custody market.
