DTCC — the backbone of U.S. securities clearing — launched its tokenization service this week, putting 34 securities worth roughly $30 trillion onto blockchain rails. This marks the first real move of Wall Street's settlement plumbing on-chain.

01

Who is DTCC, and why does this matter?

DTCC (Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation) is the central plumbing of U.S. securities markets. Its subsidiaries handle clearing, settlement, and custody for most U.S. stock and bond trades, holding over $114 trillion in securities.
This means → it is not some startup experimenting with blockchain. The pipe that runs the entire market is switching tracks — and everything flowing through it will follow.
The initial launch covers 34 securities: select large-caps from the Russell 1000, ETFs, and U.S. Treasuries, with a combined market value of roughly $30 trillion.
02

What does "tokenization" actually do here?

Tokenization — turning traditional securities into digital tokens on a blockchain — works by creating a one-to-one match between each on-chain token and a real security held by DTC. No new assets are minted; each token is a digital certificate for something that already exists.
These tokens can move between registered wallets around the clock, breaking free of traditional trading-hours constraints.
In plain terms = buying and selling stocks used to wait for the exchange to open and T+1 settlement to clear. Now, in theory, transfers can happen 24/7 on-chain — a step change in speed and flexibility.
03

Which blockchains is it running on?

The service runs on two chains simultaneously: Canton Network — an institutional blockchain network — and DTCC's own private Besu blockchain, an enterprise chain built on Ethereum technology.
This reflects a deliberate two-track strategy: plug into an external institutional network *and* keep a fully controlled in-house infrastructure, reducing dependence on any single technology path.
04

What comes next, and what is the real test?

DTCC's roadmap shows it will connect to the Stellar blockchain and Circle's Arc blockchain next year, while expanding corporate-action support and digital-cash settlement tools.
This means → DTCC is not running a one-off pilot. It is building a multi-chain, multi-currency settlement network — and if it works, the line between traditional finance and crypto infrastructure blurs further.
The real test: whether DTCC can keep expanding the pool beyond 34 securities. If the count stays in the low double digits long-term, this is a technology demo. If it scales to cover mainstream securities, it becomes a genuine reshaping of the U.S. settlement system.
