Ethereum Proposes to Reduce Finality Time to Four Minutes
nashnova research
An Ethereum research team has drafted a proposal to compress transaction finality from roughly 16 minutes to about 4 minutes — a fourfold speedup that would directly cut liquidity costs for cross-chain transfers.
What is "finality," and why change it now?
Finality is the moment the network guarantees a transaction will never be reversed — until then, any transaction can still be rolled back.
Ethereum's current finality window is roughly 16 minutes, long by major-chain standards.
This means → every cross-chain service that relies on Ethereum settlement must front its own capital during that 16-minute wait, recovering the funds only after the chain has truly settled.
What does the draft propose?
Led by Ben Edgington and co-authored by Francesco D'Amato, Roberto Saltini, Yann Vonlanthen, and Mikhail Kalinin, the proposal was submitted on Wednesday.
The core target: compress finality from ~16 minutes to roughly 4 minutes, a fourfold improvement in settlement speed.
The proposal remains a draft with no activation date; deployment hinges on further design work and community consensus.
Where does the money get stuck in a cross-chain transfer?
Example: a user initiates a $10,000 cross-chain transfer. The bridge service pays the user instantly from its own reserves, then waits for the original Ethereum transaction to settle before recouping the funds.
In plain terms = the service provider is giving the user an interest-free, 16-minute loan — the time that money sits locked up is the liquidity cost.
Cut finality to 4 minutes and that lock-up shrinks by three-quarters, sharply reducing the provider's capital burden — and potentially lowering cross-chain transfer fees.
How far away is this from going live?
The draft has no firm launch timeline and must still pass through technical refinement, security audits, and community governance votes.
This means → Ethereum's settlement experience will not change in the near term, but the directional signal is clear: the core research team is prioritizing shorter confirmation times.
This reflects Ethereum's move to shore up its own settlement layer as it competes with faster newer chains.
