EU Gas Storage Hits Nearly Two-Decade Seasonal Low, Winter Pivot to LNG Restocking

EU gas storage sits at just 57% — the lowest for this time of year since records began in 2009. With winter months away, whether Europe can secure enough LNG at a reasonable cost is now the central question for supply security.
How low are stocks, exactly?
EU gas storage stands at roughly 57%, the lowest for this point in the year since 2009 records began.
This means → with winter only months away, Europe's supply cushion is thinner than at any time in the past fifteen years.
The EU Gas Coordination Group says reaching 80% is technically "achievable" and would be enough for winter — but climbing from 57% to 80% leaves a tight window.
Why did stocks fall this far?
The direct cause is the Iran war shock: roughly one-fifth of global LNG supply has been disrupted.
Since April, European imports of LNG — liquefied natural gas, chilled into liquid form and shipped by tanker — have been sliding.
In plain terms = less gas is available worldwide, and Asian buyers are snapping up what remains, squeezing Europe's purchasing room further.
Will Europe run short this winter?
The EU Gas Coordination Group concluded at its July meeting: no immediate risk to winter supply security.
The European Commission stresses that the EU has ample spare LNG import capacity and can ramp up shipments during winter to work "in tandem" with storage.
The group's next regular meeting is in September, but the Commission added it can "convene an emergency session at any time" — a caveat that signals officials are not entirely at ease.
Where does the real risk lie?
The industry broadly does not expect a physical shortage, but the price risk is very real.
This means → the question is not "will there be gas?" but "how much will it cost?"
If global supply stays tight, Europe will have to bid against Asia and other regions for LNG cargoes during peak winter demand — potentially driving restocking costs sharply higher.
