EU Launches AI Superfactory Recruitment, Leveraging €30 Billion in Investment

The European Commission has launched a call for up to seven AI Gigafactories, aiming to mobilize roughly €30 billion in total investment and close its widening compute-infrastructure gap with the United States.
Where does the money come from?
Total investment target: roughly €30 billion (about $34.4 billion). Of that, €10 billion will come from EU-level funds and participating member states combined.
This means → most of the capital must come from private sector and national co-financing. The EU is providing seed money and institutional backing, not footing the full bill.

Seven factories — how are they selected, and when do they go live?
The call supports up to seven AI Gigafactories, rolled out in two phases: site selection and preparation first, then actual construction.
Deadline for applications is November 12, 2026. The Commission expects to award contracts by July 2027.
Winners must be operational within 18 months of contract signing. This means → the earliest any facility could be running is roughly early 2029.
