The European defense sector has recently seen a significant pullback, following a commitment from NATO member countries to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, the STOXX Europe Aerospace & Defense 15 Index soared by 56.5% in 2025. However, due to investors' wavering over the risks associated with the implementation of defense spending, some defense stocks have fallen 20% to 30% from their highs last year. As the core of European defense expansion, Germany's delayed defense budget and procurement bureaucracy have hindered the advancement of military contracts. This has led to the price-to-earnings ratio of some German defense stocks retreating from high levels over 35 times to around 20 times.

The global asset management firm AllianceBernstein believes that the previous overheated market sentiment has cooled down, and the valuation return provides a more attractive entry point for the long-term military spending theme. AllianceBernstein is currently focusing on Renk, a defense pillar enterprise in Bavaria, Germany. The company is a global market leader in tank transmissions, mainly producing engines, gearboxes, and special parts for tanks, warships, and other combat vehicles.

Marcus Morris-Eyton, a portfolio manager at AllianceBernstein, stated that Renk's advantage lies in its after-sales market-focused business model. Unlike the one-time sale of arms and ammunition that ends with replenishment, Renk will have the opportunity for high-profit after-sales maintenance for up to 10 to 20 years after selling tank transmissions. This long-cycle business model has a performance visibility of up to 20 years, showing stronger certainty against the backdrop of European defense procurement disputes and the overall reversal of the sector.
