France's October Services PMI Plunges to 46.2, Fastest Contraction Since May

France's services PMI crashed from 51.2 to 46.2 in October, falling below the expansion line and well short of the flash estimate, as social protests crushed domestic demand and raised fresh doubts about the near-term outlook.
What does 46.2 actually mean?
The services PMI — a monthly survey gauge where above 50 signals expansion, below 50 signals contraction — dropped from 51.2 to 46.2 in a single month, flipping from growth to decline.
This means → French services didn't just slow down; they hit the brakes — the fastest contraction since May.
The final reading of 46.2 also came in well below the flash estimate of 48.4, signalling that demand deteriorated even further in the second half of October.
Why did it fall so sharply?
S&P Global's survey pointed to social protests as the main driver, triggering a sharp contraction in domestic demand.
Senior chief economist Joe Hayes said clients were "broadly postponing decisions" — caught between social unrest and surging government bond yields.
In plain terms = the streets were in turmoil, borrowing costs were spiking, and businesses and consumers simply stopped spending.
Is this just a services-sector problem?
The composite PMI — covering both services and manufacturing — fell in tandem from 51.1 to 46.6, also the fastest drop since May.
This means → it is not one sector having a bad month; France's entire private sector reversed course in October.
INSEE, France's statistics office, had already reported consumer confidence at its lowest since June 2013, corroborating the PMI data — weakness on the demand side is now showing up across multiple indicators simultaneously.
What comes next?
The wide gap between the final and flash readings (46.2 vs 48.4) reflects a deterioration in late October that exceeded mid-month expectations.
In plain terms = conditions at month-end were worse than at mid-month, and there is no sign yet of a bottom.
Whether upcoming data stabilise will be the key test for judging if this is a temporary shock or the start of a sustained downturn in the French economy.
