Google Gemini Approaches 1 Billion MAU, Closing In on ChatGPT

Google's AI assistant Gemini has topped 950 million monthly active users — tripling in a year — while ChatGPT's market share dipped below 50% for the first time, signalling a shift from one-player dominance to a two-horse race.
How big is 950 million?
Gemini's MAU roughly tripled year-on-year, from about 300 million to 950 million.
As recently as February the figure was 750 million — it added another 200 million in barely four months. The growth is accelerating.
Google calls products with 1 billion-plus MAU its "billion-user club" — Search, Gmail, YouTube, Chrome are all members. This means → once Gemini crosses that line, it sits alongside Google's most universal apps.
How much of ChatGPT's lead remains?
ChatGPT crossed 1 billion MAU first, reaching the milestone in June 2026.
Yet Sensor Tower's latest *State of AI* report shows ChatGPT's share of the AI-assistant market fell below 50% for the first time in H1 2026.
Gemini's share climbed to 27.7%. In plain terms = six months ago ChatGPT held half the market; now nearly a third belongs to Gemini, and the gap is narrowing fast.
What is driving Gemini's growth?
CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted two new features: Daily Briefings and the personalised agent Gemini Spark, now live in the US and international markets.
On iOS alone, Gemini was downloaded more than 137 million times over the past 12 months; the image-generation model Nano Banana was one catalyst for iOS uptake.
This reflects a crucial shift — Gemini's growth no longer relies solely on Android's home turf; it is reaching into the iPhone user base, the key battleground against ChatGPT.
Where does AI search fit in?
Google also disclosed that its AI search feature "AI Mode" has surpassed 1 billion MAU; Pichai said it produced an "incremental lift" in search queries.
This means → Gemini the assistant and AI Mode the search tool are forming a twin engine — one for conversation, one for search — both keeping users inside Google's ecosystem.
