Hong Kong Stocks Opened Higher on October 21, Lenovo Group Surged Over 6% to Lead Hang Seng Index
nashnova research
Hong Kong's major indexes all opened higher on October 21, with the Hang Seng up 1.14% at 24,139. Lenovo jumped over 6% to lead the index, while pharma and tech rose across the board — but CATL fell after reporting Q3 results.
How much did the indexes gain at open?
The Hang Seng Index rose 1.14% to 24,139.11; the Hang Seng Tech Index climbed 1.60% to 4,110.74.
The H-share Index gained 1.36%; the Red Chip Index added 0.41% — all four benchmarks opened in the green, led by tech and state enterprises.
This means → capital tilted toward tech and state-linked names right at the bell — a selective bid, not a broad lift.
Which tech stocks led the charge?
Lenovo (00992) opened up 6.02%, the top gainer among both Hang Seng and Hang Seng Tech constituents.
XPeng rose 3.78% and Li Auto gained 2.94%, ranking second and third among Hang Seng Tech components.
All 30 Hang Seng Tech constituents opened higher — not a single one fell. This means → the tech rally was broad-based, not driven by a handful of names.
Why was pharma also rallying?
The Hang Seng Healthcare Index rose 2.22%, the biggest gain among all 12 Hang Seng sector indexes.
Innovent Biologics (01801) gained 4.35% and BeiGene (06160) rose 4.08%, ranking second and third among Hang Seng Index component gainers.
In plain terms = tech and pharma were the two strongest themes at the open, and pharma's sector index actually outpaced tech's.
CATL just reported Q3 — why did it fall?
CATL (03750) opened down 2.87%, the worst performer among Hang Seng Index constituents.
Q3 revenue hit RMB 165.2 billion, up 58.58% year-on-year; net profit attributable to shareholders was RMB 21.2 billion, up 14.54%.
This means → revenue growth looked strong, but profit growth lagged far behind. The market's concern: earnings aren't keeping pace with sales, raising questions about whether the current valuation can hold.
What else fell, and what's the bigger picture?
Xinyi Glass (00868) dipped 1.35%; China Mobile (00941) slipped 0.75%. China Mobile reported nine-month revenue of RMB 780.3 billion, down 1.8% year-on-year, with net profit of RMB 106.2 billion, down 7.9%.
The Hang Seng Telecom Index fell 0.61% — the only declining sector among all 12 Hang Seng industry indexes; the other 11 all rose.
Overnight, the Dow gained 1.02%, the S&P 500 added 0.28%, and the Nasdaq edged down 0.02%. In plain terms = the external backdrop was warm, Hong Kong followed suit, but telecom and companies with underwhelming earnings were left behind.
