IBM is acquiring HRL Laboratories — the quantum research lab jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors — adding electron-spin qubits alongside its existing superconducting circuits; the move is a formal dual-track bet while the quantum-computing technology race remains wide open.

What does HRL Laboratories actually do?

HRL is based near Malibu, California, and traces its origins to the Hughes Aircraft Company research division. It now specializes in electron-spin qubits — quantum circuits that encode information in the spin direction of a single electron, making them physically smaller than IBM's superconducting circuits.
Boeing and GM are HRL's co-owners. Both will continue collaborating with IBM on quantum technology after the deal closes.

Why open a second track beyond superconducting?

IBM Research chief Jay Gambetta told Reuters: "I and the team strongly believe the future is going to be spin, superconducting, or some combination of the two."

Gambetta said HRL's team will relocate from California to IBM's advanced chip-fabrication site in New York, using IBM's existing lines to produce spin-based quantum chips.
IBM will roll out a spin-technology quantum path "soon," but Gambetta added that the strategic value of the spin track will materialize after IBM's "Blue Jay" superconducting system ships in 2033.
This means → the spin track will not replace the superconducting mainline in the near term. It is a technology reserve card aimed at the post-2033 era.

How does this deal fit the broader industry picture?

In May, the U.S. government announced $1 billion in funding for IBM to set up "Anderon," a quantum-chip foundry in New Albany, New York, serving American quantum-computing companies.
Google earlier this year brought in neutral-atom technology — trapping and arranging individual atoms with lasers to perform quantum computation — in its own push to diversify quantum approaches.
