Intel Q4 Guidance Disappoints Sharply: BofA Downgrades, JPMorgan Cuts Target Price

Intel beat Q3 expectations but issued Q4 revenue guidance roughly 9% below consensus, sending shares down about 25% in a day; BofA cut its rating from Buy straight to Neutral, JPMorgan lowered its target to $80, and the core debate now centers on whether the foundry business can deliver.

01

Q3 beat expectations — so why did the stock crater?

Q3 revenue hit $16.513 billion, up 20.9% year-on-year. Adjusted EPS came in at $0.52, about 30% above consensus — the numbers themselves were fine.
The problem was Q4 guidance: midpoint revenue of $15.5 billion, roughly 9% below the Street's $17.05 billion; EPS guidance just $0.25, less than 60% of the $0.43–$0.44 consensus.
This means → the market prices the next quarter, not the last one. Once guidance broke, the prior beat became irrelevant.
02

Where exactly does Q4 fall short?

The biggest drag is PCs: the client-computing segment is expected to drop over 20% sequentially. BofA estimates PC shipments declining 25% to 30% quarter-on-quarter.
Management cut its PC total-addressable-market forecast for two straight years — down 12% in 2026, another 10% in 2027 — and expects OEM inventory correction to last at least through Q1 2027.
An unplanned shutdown at Israel's Fab 28 adds roughly $300 million in lost Q4 revenue and about 200 basis points of gross-margin drag, concentrated in 10 nm server products.
In plain terms = weak PC demand and a factory outage hit the same quarter at once.
03

Why is the data-center unit being called "the strongest in 15 years"?

Data center and AI revenue reached $7.318 billion — up 16.9% sequentially and roughly 78% year-on-year, the segment's strongest sequential gain in 15 years.
Hyperscale cloud and enterprise customers drove the surge. JPMorgan estimates Intel's ASIC business — custom chips built for specific clients — grew over 50% sequentially and more than doubled year-on-year, running at an annualized ~$2.8 billion.
This reflects real AI-compute demand flowing to Intel, but the PC collapse completely overshadowed it in the market's reaction.
04

How is the foundry progressing — and why did BofA downgrade here?

On execution, news is positive: Intel 18A — the company's next-generation manufacturing process — has seen costs fall about 40% since Q1, with yields ahead of plan. More than 10 long-term CPU agreements are signed, including Oracle.
BofA's downgrade rationale is blunt: the stock "has not yet conveyed sufficient external foundry customer progress." Technology is advancing; orders have not caught up.
BofA modeled a scenario: if Apple, MediaTek, and others sign on, external foundry revenue could reach $46 billion by 2030, roughly 8%–10% of the global wafer-foundry market. But until deal specifics are clear, the base model stays unchanged.
This means → the foundry is the key variable for Intel's re-rating, but it remains aspirational. BofA chose to step back and wait.
05

Capital spending is rising further — where does the money come from?

Management said 2027 capex will grow "strongly" from the 2026 baseline of $20 billion. BofA assumes north of $26 billion; its 2028 model goes to $30.4 billion.
The result: 2027 free cash flow is confirmed negative — JPMorgan models roughly negative $6.6 billion, BofA roughly negative $2.6 billion.
In plain terms = Intel is spending faster than it earns. The $23 billion equity raise announced in August was explicitly positioned to fund this gap.
06

What does this mean for other companies?

PC weakness spills directly into AMD: BofA estimates up to $750 million in client-PC drag, partly offset by over $500 million in strong server-CPU revenue.
Intel's data-center strength is a positive signal for Nvidia, Broadcom, and Marvell — AI compute demand is real.
Rising capex benefits semiconductor-equipment makers, especially KLA, Applied Materials, and Lam Research — Intel is building fabs and buying tools, and orders flow to them.
This means → Intel's own stock is under pressure, but the money it spends is feeding the upstream supply chain.
