Japan is considering deploying Palantir and Anduril AI systems within the Self-Defense Forces' command structure to compress decision cycles, while planning a domestic AI layer as a sovereignty backstop — a move that would reshape the technical foundation of U.S.–Japan joint operations.

Which AI systems is Japan looking at, and what do they do?

Two candidates: Palantir's Maven Smart System (MSS) and Anduril's Lattice platform.
MSS analyzes battlefield data, assesses targets, and auto-selects optimal tactics. It was used in U.S. strikes against Iran.
Lattice fuses multi-sensor data into a unified picture and can network drones autonomously even when communications are degraded.
U.S. Central Command chief Gen. Brad Cooper said advanced AI tools "compress processes that once took hours or days into seconds."

Why does Japan need this now?

The SDF currently has no AI in its command-and-control loop — its decision speed lags far behind the AI-equipped U.S. military.
This means → in joint operations, the SDF's slower tempo is dragging down overall coordination, and that is the most direct driver.
The government plans to fold AI into core defense transformation over the next five years, covering counter-strike, missile defense, and drone control.
Details will be finalized before year-end revisions to Japan's three core security documents.

What is the "domestic AI command hub" concept?

The plan: layer a Japanese-built "command hub" AI on top of the American systems, letting it decide which system to call for each scenario.
A leading contender is Sakana Fugu, built by Tokyo-based Sakana AI and released in June, capable of orchestrating across multiple AI models.
Sakana AI already holds a contract with a Japan Ministry of Defense affiliate.
In plain terms = the U.S. AI systems are the workers; the Japanese AI is the foreman assigning tasks — sovereignty lives in who decides who does what.

What is the built-in contradiction?

The Japanese hub must fully exploit the American systems' capabilities to keep overall combat power intact.
This means → the deeper Japan's AI adapts to the U.S. systems, the harder it becomes to actually replace them.
