A Nikkei survey shows Japan's AI data center capacity will grow from 1.1 GW to 4.9 GW, requiring roughly $60 billion in construction spending alone — a more-than-threefold expansion that would place Japan among the world's top AI infrastructure markets, if power supply can keep up.

Nikkei surveyed 26 data center operators: Japan's total AI data center capacity is projected to rise from 1.1 GW at end-2025 to 4.9 GW by 2033 — more than tripling.
This means → Japan plans to build four times its current compute infrastructure in eight years, trailing only the U.S. and China in scale.
Cushman & Wakefield estimates construction costs at roughly $16 billion per GW, putting the build-out at about $60 billion. Add servers and semiconductors, and the total could reach hundreds of billions of dollars.
Who is leading the build-out?
NTT Group has the most aggressive target: capacity of 2 GW by fiscal 2033 — double its previous goal and roughly seven times its end-2025 total.
SoftBank plans to expand to 255 MW by fiscal 2027, about triple its current scale. SoftBank previously estimated Japan would need 4.2 GW by 2030 — broadly in line with the survey.

A single 500 MW project in Akita Prefecture carries an estimated price tag of up to ¥2 trillion (~$13 billion) and could become one of Japan's largest data centers.
Where does Japan rank globally?
ABI Research forecasts: U.S. AI data center capacity will grow from 8.2 GW this year to 26.4 GW by 2031; China from 3.1 GW to 10.3 GW; Europe from 3.5 GW to 9.7 GW.
This means → if Japan hits 4.9 GW on schedule, it will surpass most individual European countries and rank among the global leaders.
This reflects a broader shift: hyperscalers like Microsoft and AWS are treating Japan as Asia-Pacific's second-largest compute node after China.
What is the biggest risk?
Power supply is the top bottleneck: total electricity demand from the surveyed projects equals the output of four large nuclear reactors. Grid-connection delays could push timelines back.
Some sites already face community opposition over noise and water-resource concerns.
