Japan's August Services PMI Rises to 52.5, Highest in Five Months
nashnova research
Japan's services PMI hit 52.5 in August — a five-month high — as domestic demand drove faster expansion, yet export orders shrank at the steepest pace since late 2020, reinforcing the case for another BOJ rate hike.
Services are picking up — where exactly?
The PMI rose from 51.2 in July to 52.5, staying above the 50 expansion line. This means → services are not just growing — they are growing faster.
New orders have expanded for 26 straight months, with August's pace outstripping July's, driven mainly by domestic clients.
In plain terms = Japanese consumers and businesses are spending; domestic demand is the engine behind this rebound.
Export orders are deteriorating — how bad is it?
Export new orders contracted for a fifth consecutive month, at the sharpest rate since November 2020.
This means → the picture is strong at home, weak abroad. Japan's services growth is riding almost entirely on domestic demand, while external demand is a drag.
Employment grew for a 12th straight month, but at the slowest pace in nearly a year. This reflects a gap between headline expansion and actual business confidence.
How is inflation pressure feeding through?
Input-cost inflation eased to a four-month low, yet remains among the fastest readings in three and a half years.
Output-price inflation hit its second-highest level on record. In plain terms = firms cannot absorb the costs, so they are passing them on to customers.
S&P Global economist Annabel Fiddes noted that persistent cost pressure means "official inflation data may rise further in the months ahead."
What does this mean for a BOJ rate hike?
The composite PMI (manufacturing + services) rose to 53.5, a six-month high. Stronger growth alongside rising inflation is the textbook setup for a central bank to consider tightening.
Fiddes stated explicitly: stronger growth combined with rising inflation "will bolster the case for the BOJ to raise rates again."
Business confidence improved from July but remains subdued by recent standards. This reflects that firms see orders picking up, yet remain cautious about whether the momentum will last.
