Japan's June Exports Surge 19.3%, Marking Fastest Growth Since November 2022

Japan's June exports rose 19.3% year-on-year, the fastest pace since November 2022, driven by surging semiconductor-equipment shipments and a persistently weak yen — but imports jumped 25.4% too, as the yen's slide inflated both sides of the ledger.

01

How strong is this export number?

June exports grew 19.3% year-on-year, beating the Reuters consensus of 18.6% and topping May's 16.8%.
This is the fastest export growth since November 2022, accelerating for a second straight month.
This means → exports aren't just holding up — they're accelerating past what the market expected.
02

What's driving it? Why are chip-equipment exports surging?

The biggest driver is semiconductor equipment — the global AI demand wave is pulling Japanese equipment orders higher.
Tokyo Electron, Renesas, and Advantest have gained between 50% and 93% this year; the market is already pricing in this demand surge.
The other force is the weak yen: the dollar is hovering near ¥163, a multi-decade low. In plain terms = the same machine sold abroad converts into a bigger yen number automatically.
03

Why are imports surging too — and what does that signal?

June imports rose 25.4% year-on-year, also the highest since November 2022, well above the 21% consensus.
This means → the weak yen cuts both ways: export figures look strong, but import bills are inflated just as much.
The Bank of Japan noted in June that AI demand is lifting overseas economies and Japan's terms of trade are improving — yet imports are growing faster than exports, so the scale of that improvement remains uncertain.
04

What does this mean for Japan's broader economy?

Exports are a core engine of Japan's economy. First-quarter GDP grew 0.5% quarter-on-quarter, revised to an annualized 1.8%.
The BOJ sees recession fears fading; the export data supports that view.
The open question: with yen depreciation pressure ongoing and trade-friction risks unresolved, whether this export momentum can last is the key point to watch next.
