Konaga CEO: Container Shipping Lines to Return to Suez Canal by Q2 2027
nashnova research
Kuehne+Nagel CEO Stefan Paul says most container carriers plan to resume Suez Canal routing by late Q1 to early Q2 2027, but warns geopolitical uncertainty remains the biggest wildcard.
Why do carriers want to go back now?
Since November 2023, Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping forced most carriers to reroute around Africa, adding significant voyage time.
Rising oil prices have made the longer route increasingly expensive — the economics of a shorter passage are getting harder to ignore.
This means → the push to return is not about improving security — it is about the cost of the detour becoming unsustainable.
What keeps blocking the return?
In February this year, U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran derailed earlier plans to resume Suez transits.
Paul himself acknowledged that the geopolitical situation "still carries significant uncertainty."
In plain terms = carriers want to go back, but the Red Sea has not yet produced a stable enough security signal for anyone to move first.
Hasn't Maersk already gone back?
Maersk has resumed some Suez Canal services, making it one of the first major carriers to test the route.
Analysts, however, say the gradual return is unlikely to materially affect carrier earnings this year.
This means → one company testing the water is not the same as an industry-wide return — a full-scale shift is not expected before the first half of 2027.
What does this mean for Kuehne+Nagel itself?
Kuehne+Nagel is a freight forwarder — it arranges shipments for clients but does not own vessels — so its revenue depends on cargo volumes, not freight rates.
Paul explicitly stated that a Suez reopening "would not materially affect client demand."
This reflects a structural split: a shorter route saves fuel for shipowners; a forwarder earns its fee on volume, not on voyage length.
Kuehne+Nagel has raised its 2026 earnings guidance for the third time this year — confidence driven by volumes, not routing.
