Kuo Ming-chi: OpenAI Phones to Enter Mass Production by H1 2027 at the Soonest
Renowned Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released the latest industry survey stating that OpenAI's first AI Agent smartphone is accelerating its development with the goal of mass production as early as the first half of 2027. If the development pace remains unchanged, the combined shipments from 2027 to 2028 could reach approximately 30 million units.
Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the positioning of this device fundamentally differs from existing smartphones, as users will no longer operate around a bunch of Apps but instead complete their needs through AI Agent task flows.
In terms of supply chain, MediaTek currently appears to have a higher chance of becoming the sole processor supplier. The device is expected to adopt a custom version of the Dimensity 9600 and use TSMC's N2P node in the second half of 2026.

From a specification perspective, visual perception and on-device AI computing power are the focal points. Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned that the ISP will be a main selling point, with enhanced HDR processes used to improve visual perception in real scenarios, dual-NPU architecture managing heterogeneous AI computations, and LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0 addressing memory bottlenecks.
Previously, Ming-Chi Kuo stated that OpenAI is collaborating with MediaTek and Qualcomm on the development of smartphone processors, with Luxshare taking on the role of exclusive system協力 design and manufacturer.
