Lockheed Martin Launches Budget Version of Patriot Missile at Less Than Half the Current Price

Lockheed Martin launched the PAC-3 ACE interceptor at Farnborough, priced below $2 million — less than half the current MSE's $4 million-plus unit cost. This means → the West is betting on a cheaper, higher-volume missile to close the air-defense gap that Ukraine and the Middle East have torn open.
How much cheaper is this missile?
The current PAC-3 MSE costs over $4 million per round. The new ACE targets under $2 million — at least a 50% cut.
ACE fires from existing Patriot launchers with no platform swap. This means → allied nations can buy rounds without replacing their launch systems.
Lockheed plans to co-develop and co-manufacture with U.S. and European industrial partners. Initial production can start within 36 months.
Why the urgency for a budget interceptor now?
Since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, Patriot interceptors have become one of the most sought-after weapons globally. Zelensky has repeatedly called for more launchers and rounds.
Simultaneously, missile exchanges involving Iran, the U.S., and Israel have further drained Western stockpiles, exposing a capacity bottleneck across the entire defense-industrial base.
In plain terms = two conflicts are burning through ammunition at once, and resupply cannot keep pace. "Good enough and affordable" now matters more than "best in class but scarce."
What is wrong with the current production line?
U.S. Army acquisition official Brent Ingraham said publicly that the PAC-3 was not originally designed for manufacturability — it relies heavily on hand-built, hand-assembled processes.
This reflects a deeper mismatch: the Patriot was designed as a precision Cold War–era weapon on a "small-batch, high-craft" production logic. Today's demand calls for mass production.
Lockheed and RTX (which builds the Patriot launcher) have pledged to triple or quadruple output of select advanced missiles over the coming years, but scaling takes time.
What is the U.S. military doing on its own?
The U.S. Army has launched a competitive tender this year for a new interceptor priced below $1 million per round.
This means → ACE (under $2 million) is not the military's ultimate price floor. $1 million is the real target.
The tender allows entirely new designs for the seeker — the missile's "eye" that locks onto a target — the rocket motor, and other major components. Put simply = not just a price cut, but a ground-up redesign for a cheaper round.
Why announce it at a European air show?
The choice of Farnborough as the launch venue directly targets procurement demand from Europe's rearmament wave.
But there is a tension: European governments are simultaneously pushing to reduce dependence on U.S. suppliers and expand domestic defense manufacturing.
In plain terms = Lockheed wants to sell into Europe's rising defense budgets, but Europe is also nurturing its own contractors. Whether ACE can win in that procurement competition is the key test for this strategy.
