Long March 7A Explodes 85 Seconds After Launch, ChinaSat 4B Satellite Total Loss

China's Long March 7A rocket broke apart in the atmosphere roughly 85 seconds after launching from Wenchang on August 10, destroying the multi-billion-yuan ChinaSat 4B communications satellite — and because the rocket shares its core engine with the Long March 5 slated to fly the Chang'e-7 lunar mission in two weeks, the investigation's findings could ripple across China's near-term space agenda.
What happened on launch night?
The Long March 7A Y18 lifted off from Wenchang carrying ChinaSat 4B. Roughly 85 seconds into flight, the vehicle disintegrated, producing a massive fireball.
Durham University professor Jonathan McDowell, cited by *Nikkei Asia*, said the payload and debris never reached orbit — a complete mission failure.
Social-media footage suggests the second stage began buckling near Max Q — the point of peak aerodynamic stress on the rocket.
Chinese authorities confirmed the failure and opened an investigation but have not disclosed the cause: whether it was a system malfunction or a deliberate flight-termination trigger remains unknown.
How significant is the lost satellite?
ChinaSat 4B is a geostationary communications satellite — a relay station parked roughly 36,000 km above a fixed point on Earth — serving voice, data, broadcast, and television links.
According to earlier reporting by China's state broadcaster, the ChinaSat 4A and 4B twin-satellite system cost a combined ≈3.2 billion yuan.

This means → the loss extends beyond a single commercial bird; it could affect redundancy planning for both civilian broadcasting and military comms.
Why could this failure cascade beyond one rocket?
The Long March 7A uses the YF-100 kerosene-LOX engine, the same powerplant that flies on the Long March 5.
China plans to launch Chang'e-7 — a lunar south-pole exploration mission — aboard a Long March 5 on August 24. Preparations are already under way at Wenchang.
In plain terms = the two rockets share the same "heart." If investigators trace the fault to the engine, shared manufacturing processes, or launch-site procedures, the Chang'e-7 window is at risk.
No sign yet that the lunar mission will slip; the final call depends on the investigation.
Has commercial spaceflight been affected too?
LandSpace had scheduled its Zhuque-3 rocket's second orbital-stage recovery test for August 11 at Jiuquan.
Chinese media report the launch has been postponed to August 31 because of the Long March 7A failure.
This reflects how quickly a state-program failure can freeze commercial launch schedules — regulators are highly alert to contagion risk.
What does the Long March 7A's track record tell us?
This is the rocket's second failure since its 2020 maiden flight — that debut also ended in an explosion.
After the first failure the vehicle compiled a string of successes, most recently sending Tianlian-3 01 to geostationary orbit in late July.
The investigation's central question: does this accident reveal a systemic defect, or is it an isolated anomaly?
