Fidji Simo, the executive overseeing OpenAI's product and business operations, has stepped down to a part-time advisory role after her chronic illness worsened — leaving a leadership gap as the company targets a $1 trillion IPO now pushed to 2027.
Why did Simo leave?
Simo has postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) — a chronic condition that causes abnormal heart-rate spikes upon standing. She was diagnosed in 2019.
In an internal memo, she admitted she had postponed medical tests and new treatments throughout her time at OpenAI. Three months ago the condition flared acutely, forcing a medical leave.
This means → her departure is not a typical executive reshuffle. A core leader is physically unable to continue full-time, with no clear recovery timeline.
What was her role, and why does it matter?
Simo joined OpenAI's board in March 2024, then was personally recruited by Sam Altman to run all product and business operations — freeing Altman to focus on research and data centers.
In plain terms = Altman handed her the two biggest day-to-day jobs — building the product and making money from it.
Her prior résumé: CEO of Instacart and head of the Facebook app at Meta — a rare Silicon Valley executive who combined consumer-product instincts with commercial scale.

Thibault Sottiaux has been named head of core product, overseeing ChatGPT and major product lines.
Co-founder Greg Brockman has taken over product strategy; former COO Brad Lightcap has moved to a special-projects role.
This reflects an internal reshuffle completed during Simo's leave — but the current setup looks more like backfill from within than a hire of comparable external weight.
How is OpenAI's product direction shifting?
The company is consolidating around a few core products: merging ChatGPT, an AI browser, and an AI coding assistant into a single "super app", while shutting down peripheral efforts like Sora.
On Thursday it shipped the largest product update since ChatGPT's launch — AI agents that can handle local files and write code on a user's behalf, plus a redesigned desktop interface.
