Novo Nordisk's oral Wegovy tablet is now on sale in Germany — the drug's first EU market — extending the oral weight-loss race from the US and UK into the heart of Europe.

01

Why Germany first?

Germany is the EU's largest pharmaceutical market and a key European launch pad for new drugs.
The Wegovy tablet had already launched in the US, UK, and UAE; Germany is its first market among the EU's 27 member states.
This means → Novo is entering the EU through its highest-spending market, setting the template for rollouts elsewhere in the bloc.
02

What does it cost — and what is it?

Novo says the tablet will be priced by dose, on par with the injection pen — which currently retails at German pharmacies for €170 to €280.
The tablet contains semaglutide — a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics the body's fullness signal so patients eat less — the same active ingredient in injectable Wegovy and the diabetes drug Ozempic.
In plain terms = same compound, same price; the only difference is swallowing a pill versus taking a shot — the oral form's selling point is a lower barrier to use.
03

Where does the approval stand?

In May, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) issued a positive recommendation.
In July, the European Commission granted formal marketing authorization across the EU.
This means → the regulatory path is clear EU-wide; country-by-country launch timing now depends on local pricing and reimbursement talks.
04

How close is Eli Lilly?

Lilly's oral weight-loss drug Foundayo launched in the UK in late August and is under regulatory review in more than 40 markets, with full rollout expected by 2027.
Novo oral-business executive Doustdar said Wegovy tablets hold roughly 90% of the oral obesity market.
Yet Foundayo has gained steady traction since its US approval in April — the gap is narrowing.
05

How big is this market?

Analysts forecast the GLP-1 weight-loss market will exceed $100 billion a year by 2030.
Novo said in January that oral formats could account for more than a third of total GLP-1 volume by then.
This means → the oral segment alone could be a $30 billion-plus market — whoever rolls out fastest locks in share.
06

What comes next?

Novo Nordisk holds a Capital Markets Day on September 21.
The market will watch for details on the oral expansion strategy — especially launch timelines for other EU countries.
This reflects a shift: oral weight-loss drugs have moved from the "get approved" phase into a commercialization race over who can cover more ground faster.
