Nvidia has confirmed Taipei's Beitou-Shilin Science and Technology Park as the site for its first overseas corporate headquarters. Premier Cho Jung-tai said the government backed the project across budget, legal, and policy channels — a signal that Taiwan is positioning itself as a regional HQ hub, not just a chip-foundry base.

01

Why did Nvidia choose Taipei?

The main draw is proximity — Beitou-Shilin Tech Park sits next to Nvidia's existing Taipei R&D center, so teams can scale without relocating.
This means → Nvidia is not starting from scratch. It is upgrading an existing footprint into a headquarters, leveraging sunk costs and a local talent network.
Nvidia had already set up its first overseas R&D center in Taipei under Taiwan's Forward-Looking Infrastructure Program, using an AI innovation subsidy. This move takes that presence from R&D outpost to corporate HQ.
02

What did the government do to make it happen?

Budget: Between 2021 and 2022, the Executive Yuan channeled Forward-Looking Infrastructure funds into an AI R&D subsidy that covered Nvidia and several other major tech firms.
Legal: When Nvidia eyed a Beitou-Shilin plot in 2025, a land-rights dispute with Shin Kong Life blocked progress. Taiwan's Ministry of the Interior cleared the obstacle in July 2025 with a special land-rights arrangement.
In plain terms = the government used subsidies to get Nvidia in the door, then used a targeted legal fix to secure the land — a three-layer effort, each step enabling the next.
03

What does this mean for Taiwan?

Premier Cho stated the government's sole consideration was retaining globally important tech companies, with no partisan or local-government angle.
This reflects a shift in Taiwan's investment-attraction playbook — from "help foundries expand capacity" to actively courting multinationals to set up real operational bases on the island.
The deal is also seen as a political win for Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an ahead of his re-election bid. The bigger test: whether this "subsidy + legal fix + policy alignment" model can be replicated for the next global tech giant.
