Nvidia unveiled the Spectrum-6 Ethernet switch on July 21, doubling switching capacity to 102.4 Tb/s and directly challenging its own InfiniBand for the backbone role in hyperscale AI training clusters.

Switching capacity hits 102.4 Tb/s — twice the prior generation. At clusters exceeding 100,000 GPUs, network efficiency stays at 95%.
AI networking performance runs up to 1.6× faster than commodity Ethernet. Hardware-accelerated multi-plane topology — routing data across several parallel paths — cuts the number of switches needed by up to 1.7×.

The Spectrum-6 launch tracks the production ramp of Vera Rubin — Nvidia's next-generation AI supercomputing platform. Nvidia announced full production in late May and confirmed on July 21 that the ramp is under way.
Racks are already deployed at CoreWeave, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
This reflects a broader play: Nvidia is bundling chip, network, and platform into a single turnkey offering for cloud operators — not just selling GPUs.

Why should Broadcom be concerned?

According to Tom's Hardware, the Spectrum-X platform has already been adopted by hyperscalers including Meta and Oracle, putting it in direct competition with Broadcom's AI networking silicon.
