OpenAI Accelerates Ad Business: Poaching Meta Talent, Cutting Prices to Win Clients, Advertisers Surge to 60,000
nashnova research
OpenAI's advertiser count tripled from 20,000 to 60,000 in under two months; yet its annualized ad revenue of $1 billion still falls nearly 60% short of the $2.4 billion full-year target — whether test budgets convert to mainstream spend will define the ceiling.
Why are advertisers flooding in so fast?
ChatGPT advertisers jumped from roughly 20,000 in late August to about 60,000 by early October — a threefold increase.
Ad-tracking firm Sensor Tower estimates U.S. ad spend on ChatGPT will rise 40% month-over-month in October.
This means → OpenAI pulled two levers at once: price cuts to draw in smaller advertisers and a blitz of new tools to lower the barrier to buying ads — both drove rapid short-term volume.
Where is the team coming from — and why target Meta?
The ad team has about 140 people; nearly half joined between July and September this year, with Meta as the single largest source.
Head of the unit Dave Dugan spent over 12 years at Meta and now serves as OpenAI's VP of Global Advertising Solutions.
In plain terms = Meta runs one of the world's most mature ad machines. OpenAI isn't hiring people who "understand AI" — it wants people who know how to sell ads to brand marketers, and these recruits bring ready-made client relationships and playbooks.
How much money is it making — and how far from target?
The ad business only launched its pilot in February; by late August annualized revenue had already hit $1 billion — fast by any standard.
But OpenAI promised investors $2.4 billion in full-year 2026 ad revenue. The gap is still more than half.
This means → Ad revenue accounts for less than 2% of OpenAI's roughly $50 billion annualized total revenue. For now, it remains a supplementary line, not a core engine.
What turbulence has the team been through?
Since going live in February, the ad team has undergone seven internal reorganizations. Former head Fidji Simo stepped back from the full-time role in early July.
After taking over, Dugan restructured the team into vertical pods — retail, travel, finance — and created a separate agency-relations group.
This reflects a shift from "launch first, figure it out later" toward the same mature sales architecture Meta and Google use — but seven reorgs also signal the direction hasn't fully settled.
Will advertisers actually move real budgets over?
Most advertisers still treat ChatGPT as a test channel, typically allocating just 1%–5% of annual ad spend.
Kate Scott-Dawkins, global head of research at WPP's GroupM, expects Google to maintain long-term dominance in AI chatbot and search advertising.
Yet she also conceded she has never seen any ad channel grow as fast as OpenAI. In plain terms = the growth rate is staggering, but there is still a gap between "trying it out" and "shifting budget" — whether OpenAI can bridge that gap determines if this business is a nice-to-have or a genuine second growth curve.
