OpenAI released GPT-Live-1, a full-duplex voice model that can listen and speak simultaneously, routing complex queries to GPT-5.5 behind the scenes. The rollout begins Wednesday for all ChatGPT users — a base of over 150 million weekly actives.
What can GPT-Live actually do?
GPT-Live-1 uses a full-duplex architecture — it can receive and produce speech at the same time, with no turn-taking required — and supports real-time language translation.
This means → it no longer works in a "you talk, it thinks, it answers" loop. Instead, it behaves like a live phone call where either side can jump in at any moment.
During conversation it inserts natural back-channel cues like "mhmm." In plain terms = it mimics the "uh-huh, I'm listening" rhythm of human dialogue, removing the robotic feel.
Why route queries to GPT-5.5 in the background?
When a user's question involves web search, deep reasoning, or complex tasks, GPT-Live hands the request to GPT-5.5 running behind the scenes.
