OpenAI Launches on AWS with Managed Agents
On April 28, AWS and OpenAI officially announced a major upgrade in their cooperation. Their core products have entered the "limited preview" phase, breaking the previous de facto bundling between OpenAI and Microsoft Azure.
The release of "Managed Agents" has announced the comprehensive migration of large models from "dialogue labs" to "enterprise production lines".
Each Party Gets What They Need
For a long time, Microsoft Azure was almost the only synonym for enterprise-level OpenAI services. This deep integration of "OpenAI + AWS" means that OpenAI has completely broken the limitations of a single cloud service provider.
Ben Thompson said that the most intriguing part of this agreement revision is that OpenAI actually used "waiving AGI clauses" in exchange for "distribution freedom".
AWS customers, who hold the top position in the global cloud market share, can now natively call OpenAI's top models without cross-cloud migration. For OpenAI, this is tantamount to activating millions of existing major customers overnight.
According to interview details disclosed by the technology depth blog Stratechery, the core of this cooperation lies in OpenAI successfully revising its exclusive agreement with Microsoft in exchange for "distribution freedom" on the world's largest cloud service provider (AWS).
OpenAI committed to consuming AWS about 2GW scale's homegrown chip (Trainium) computing power; in return, Amazon will invest $50 billion in OpenAI to support its cash burn expected to reach $14 billion by 2026.
Microsoft, although losing part of the exclusive share, has waived restrictions related to AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), optimizing the health of its financial statements.
From "API Invocation" to "Native Parasitism"
This cooperation is not a simple "model on the shelf," but a deep technological logic reconstruction.
AWS CEO Matt Garman pointed out in an interview that in the past, the most painful part of enterprise integration with AI was the need to repeatedly piece together security, permissions, and data. The significance of Managed Agents is that models run directly in AWS's native proxy environment. This is no longer a simple API call, but native parasitism.
This means that AI intelligence now has an AWS "native passport" and can securely access core data within the enterprise VPC (Virtual Private Cloud), directly performing complex tasks such as code modification and financial statement audits.
Paradigm Shift in Business Model
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in an interview that the current market demand for intelligence is infinitely elastic. What we need to do is no longer sell tokens (characters) but deliverables.
This implies that the AI billing model is shifting from "pay-as-you-go" to "pay-for-task-completion". The underlying hardware (whether it's Nvidia or AWS chips) will be transparent to users, and intelligence is evolving into a standardized infrastructure.
Stratechery blogger Ben Thompson said that this marks AI's transition from the "magic show" stage to the "factory assembly" phase. The partnership between OpenAI and AWS is using the certainty of infrastructure to hedge against the uncertainty of model research and development.
