Qualcomm Q4 Earnings Call: Memory Price Hikes Pressure Gross Margins, Handset Revenue Share Set to Drop Below 50% for the First Time
nashnova research
Qualcomm's Q4 revenue of $10.44 billion beat estimates, but handset chip sales fell 26% year-over-year and next-quarter EPS guidance came in below consensus — shares dropped over 6% after hours. The tug-of-war between memory-driven margin pressure and the ramp of non-handset businesses is reshaping the company's revenue mix.
Was this actually a good quarter?
Q4 Non-GAAP revenue hit $10.44 billion, above the Street's $10.11 billion estimate. Adjusted EPS of $2.17 edged past the $2.16 consensus.
But handset chip revenue came in at $5.14 billion — down 26% year-over-year, missing the $5.25 billion estimate. Next-quarter EPS guidance midpoint of $2.25 also trailed the $2.27 consensus.
This means → the headline beat masks weakness in the two things the market cares most about — handsets and forward guidance. The 6%+ after-hours drop reflects concern about where Qualcomm is headed, not where it just was.
Why can't the margin recover yet?
Industry-wide memory chip price hikes are pushing up handset chip costs. CFO Akash Palkhiwala said the company is raising prices across the board, but the benefit won't show in QCT gross margins until the second half of fiscal 2027, when the baseline margin is expected to return to the 48%–50% historical range.
In plain terms = costs rose now, but pricing power takes two more quarters to flow through to profits — margins get squeezed in the gap.
The data-center business adds a separate drag: it "increases operating margin but dilutes gross margin." Folding the custom silicon business into QCT also pulled that segment's pre-tax margin down by roughly 3 percentage points.
How far has the handset business shrunk?
Management expects non-handset revenue to grow over 60% year-over-year in fiscal 2027. Handset revenue as a share of QCT will fall below 50% for the first time — a structural inflection point in Qualcomm's history.
Context: the global handset market is expected to decline low-double-digits to mid-double-digits in calendar 2026, then flatten to a slight decline in 2027. China Android revenue bottomed in the June quarter and has recovered sequentially for two straight quarters.
This reflects a company shifting from "handset chip maker" to "multi-platform company." Qualcomm's share of Samsung's premium models has risen from 50% to above 70% — holding the high end, but the overall pie is shrinking.
Can the data-center business fill the handset gap?
The company reaffirmed its fiscal 2027 data-center revenue target of $5 billion, expects a quarter-by-quarter ramp exiting the year at a $7 billion annualized run rate, and targets $15 billion in fiscal 2029.
Most of the $5 billion comes from custom silicon projects with two hyperscalers; one is Amazon AWS — the ten-year revenue opportunity with AWS alone is up to $60 billion.
CEO Cristiano Amon said upside beyond $5 billion is "constrained by supply, not demand." Lab-tested power efficiency for high-bandwidth compute came in at roughly 0.3 picojoules per bit, beating the 0.5 design target, with yields above expectations.
What do automotive and licensing add to the picture?
Automotive revenue topped $2 billion in a single quarter for the first time, up 89% year-over-year, exiting fiscal 2026 at an approximately $8 billion annualized run rate. The fifth-generation Snapdragon Digital Chassis began commercial shipments in the September quarter, with per-vehicle silicon content 8× higher than the third-generation platform.
Licensing (QTL) wrapped up a landmark cycle: long-term agreements with Apple, Huawei, and Transsion have all been renewed. "Revenue run rate stays unchanged" — in plain terms = the renewals held the original royalty rates. The next renewal cycle doesn't begin until fiscal 2030.
Separately, Qualcomm signed a multi-year deal with SpaceX to supply its Dragonwing infrastructure platform for Starlink Mobile's U.S. nationwide terrestrial 5G network. Revenue will begin to appear from late fiscal 2027, mainly in fiscal 2028.
What is the market watching next?
Two core checkpoints: ① whether the margin recovery materializes in the second half of fiscal 2027 as promised; ② whether the data-center ramp can substantively offset the structural contraction in handsets.
This means → the short-term pressure on the stock isn't about a bad quarter — it's about "the new story hasn't reached its payoff window while the old story is already shrinking." The market needs to see profit contributions from data center and automotive actually scaling.
Full fiscal 2026 Non-GAAP revenue totaled $43.2 billion. The company returned $2 billion to shareholders this quarter — $1 billion in buybacks and $1 billion in dividends — maintaining its capital-return cadence.
