Samsung Chip Engineers Flock to SK Hynix as Bonus Gap Triggers Talent Exodus

Samsung has pledged significant pay raises for its semiconductor staff, but some divisions still offer less generous bonus structures with more performance conditions attached. Who wants to leave most — and why is foundry the hardest hit?
A Samsung survey of 8,297 employees in its Device Solutions (DS) division, conducted June 17–30, found that 81.5% of foundry staff — the unit that manufactures chips for outside clients — plan to switch jobs within two years. Roughly 62% described the desire as "very strong."
Across Samsung's entire semiconductor division, the departure-intent rate stood at 49.5%; system-LSI and semiconductor-research units also ran high. This means → the problem is not confined to foundry — morale across the whole semiconductor segment is fractured.
This reflects a structural dilemma: the winner-take-all dynamic in HBM plays out not just in customer orders but in talent gravity — the profitable company pulls people in, the struggling unit cannot hold them.
What are engineers actually doing — and how real is the exodus?
Samsung's union disclosed that over 200 union members have already moved to SK Hynix in 2026. On the anonymous workplace platform Blind, posts openly discussing résumé submissions to rivals are commonplace.
An engineer using the pseudonym Choi, a seven-year Samsung veteran, said staff used to volunteer for overtime to hit deadlines. Now many check SK Hynix job postings daily, feeling that extra effort at Samsung no longer earns a matching reward.
An engineer pseudonymously called Lee revealed that after SK Hynix opened a new hiring round in July, nearly everyone in his ~30-person team — bar two team leads — submitted applications. Lee himself applied for a position below his current rank, just to secure an interview.
How aggressively is SK Hynix recruiting from Samsung?
SK Hynix reportedly favors candidates with Samsung experience. A manager using the pseudonym Baek said one explicit purpose of the large performance bonuses is to attract seasoned engineers from competitors.
This means → this is not passive talent flow. SK Hynix is deliberately wielding its bonus structure as a recruitment weapon, extracting experienced engineers from Samsung by design.

What does the talent drain mean for Samsung and the HBM race?
MIT Technology Review noted that sustained talent losses could erode Samsung's internal collaboration capabilities, undermining the technological accumulation it needs to catch up in HBM.
Whoever mass-produces the next generation of HBM first will hold the stronger position in the AI-hardware customer race — and talent depth is the foundational variable in that competition.
This signals something deeper: in the AI-driven semiconductor upcycle, technological leadership and talent advantage are forming a reinforcing loop — the winner finds it ever easier to recruit, while the laggard finds it ever harder to retain.
